The Production Of A Dollar Coin
Coin collecting does not simply mean that you hold some pieces of valuable coins in your hands. According to
experts, coin collecting is like collecting pieces of history and tradition. Every dollar coin that is minted in
the United States represents a piece of history. In the United States, the origin or the place where the dollar
coin was minted plays a vital role in the functions that that certain dollar coin will play in the history of the
country. Note that there are six US facilities that mint the dollar coin namely Forth Know, Washington DC, San
Francisco, West Point, Denver and Philadelphia. Each of these minting facilities has different roles when it comes
to the production of the dollar coin.
The Philadelphia US Mint Facility
The Philadelphia coin minting facility handles the production of dollar coins that goes into general
circulation. The different kinds of coins are engraved and sculpted in these facilities. To protect the integrity
of the dollar coins, the Philadelphia minting facility is one of the most heavily guarded government facilities in
the country. Although visitors are allowed to enter at some areas of the facilities, most areas are considered as
off limits to the public.
The Denver US Mint Facility
When it comes to US mint facilities, the Denver Mint facility is considered as one of the riches. Aside from
being used for minting coins for general circulation, this facility is also used to produce commemorative dollar
coins. This place is used to capture historical events in the country by sculpting and engraving such memorable
events into the dollar coin. On the other hand, this facility also serves as storage facility silver and gold
bullion. Experts believe that this place contains several tons of gold and silver that it is considered as one of
the riches government facilities in the country.
The West Point US Mint Facility
All “uncirculated” and proof silver, gold and platinum bullion coins are stored in this place. When we talk of
uncirculated coins, we mean those coins that are struck when more force during the manufacturing process for the
purpose of creating a finer quality. The uncirculated coins are then packed and stored in the facility to preserve
its quality. These coins may later on be used as a basis for grading the quality of the coins that are in
circulation. For coin collectors, the uncirculated dollar coins are considered
as one of the most valuable pieces of coins. In fact, many coin collectors are willing to pay a high price for
uncirculated coins.
